We’ve heard a lot about Nordic style in interior design and we know that it’s currently a trend. But what you need to know first and foremost is that Scandinavian style isn’t just about white walls and lots of wood. It’s about functionality, plenty of light, comfort, warmth and intimacy. In the following lines, we’ll give you some tips & tricks for decorating your home in Nordic, Scandinavian style or as most designers now call it, Hyggie.
Colors
The characteristic color palette of the Nordic style consists of white, which is omnipresent, complemented by light shades (tones of beige, straw yellow, light gray), pastels (green, turquoise or cherry red) and accents of black.
The most common color approach in this design style is based on white, complemented by chromatic accents of blue or red in various forms – accessories, a piece of furniture or decorative wallpaper applied to a wall. But you have to remember that an accent color should not be overused in order to keep the normal Nordic style. So, you can choose a turquoise sofa, but keep the rest of the room in neutral shades.
Textures and Materials
Natural materials such as wood, wrought iron or decorative stone are key elements in the design of a Scandinavian-style space. Choose an unfinished wood, which will give the room an industrial look and add natural textiles such as cotton, wool, fur or linen for a touch of eclecticism (blankets, pillowcases, rugs, curtains and drapes). Of course, refined materials such as leather, porcelain or velvet should be used as well.
Another extremely important element that prevails in Nordic-inspired homes are houseplants, which are usually placed everywhere in the house – on the dresser, floor or table.
Light
In Scandinavian-inspired homes, natural light is considered to be an element of intimacy, so it should flood the room. Windows are large and decorated with simple, diaphanous curtains made of natural materials. Chandeliers are not so important, but the emphasis is on the lamps, which can be noticed in different corners of the room. To create that hygge atmosphere, place candles in different corners of the room or on the windowsill to improve the atmosphere in the evening.
Flooring
Carpets are not popular at all in Scandinavian-inspired homes. The interior has natural, light-colored wood flooring, with the exception of the bathrooms. However, if you want to use rugs, choose a small one and place it in the center of the room.
Accessories and furniture
“Less is more” – this is the philosophy of the Scandinavian style. Both accessories and furniture are reduced so as not to clutter the space. Popular furniture elements of this style are high chairs, round tables and 60s sofas. You can emphasize the key points in the room with framed illustrations and messages, decorative pillows or a colorful sofa.
A Nordic-style room or home can be effortlessly decorated by following a few key principles – color, furniture placement, and accessories. The airy space and natural textures will bring a hygge touch to your home.
