Designing a Schoolchild’s Room

A schoolchild’s room must be arranged in a manner that reflects the ideal environment for study hours (if they are learning from home) and for homework. Focus on the elements that matter to a student and remove objects that may cause distractions. We know that arranging a child’s room, especially a schoolchild’s, can be a real challenge. Thus, we have prepared some practical tips to help you design a schoolchild’s room as functionally as possible, while also maintaining the right atmosphere for a child’s bedroom.

We have also highlighted in other articles how important it is for a child’s bedroom to be divided into certain areas dedicated to daily activities: the study area, the relaxation area, the rest/sleeping area and the multifunctional furniture pieces will help you optimize the space effectively.

So, the first and most important thing in decorating a schoolboy’s room is to clearly delimit the work space from the areas intended for other activities – relaxation, sleep. This will help the student complete their homework in ideal conditions, eliminating any source of distraction. In addition, they will not associate the place of rest/relaxation with school.

For the rest area, consider both comfort and functionality. The bed is the main piece of furniture in the sleeping area, so it needs to be durable – choose a bed with a metal or solid wood frame and a comfortable and durable mattress. You can opt for bunk beds if the bedroom is shared by 2-3 children. Beds with storage spaces or an oversized bed with a built-in desk to save space would be a great solution.

For the relaxing zone you can opt for a few floor cushions and a small table where the child can can take a break and detach for a few moments.

The study area is perhaps the most important part of a schoolchild’s room, and the desk is the essential piece of the entire decor. Thus, you need to pay a lot of attention when it comes to its selection. The desk should match the style of the room, but at the same time be spacious enough. We recommend choosing a desk with drawers or storage spaces so that the student can organize his writing instruments, notebooks, books and other useful elements for school. The desk is complemented by a chair, which should be comfortable and ensure correct posture when sitting at the desk. Above the desk, you can implement sturdy wall-mounted shelves, providing the perfect space for study-related items.

Organizing the desk and study space is essential, especially since we all know that clutter is the most counterproductive thing. Organize all the books, notebooks, folders and other school items in pieces of furniture for storage, such as shelves, chests of drawers, drawers or even mini-libraries if space allows. To save space, expand the storage furniture vertically, not horizontally. We recommend keeping the desk as clear and airy as possible, with any remaining items neatly organized in trays, holders, or boxes.

Regarding the light, ideally, the student’s bedroom should be flooded with natural light, which helps regulate energy levels and sleep schedules. We recommend placing the desk in an area with enough natural light, perhaps even in front of a window. Avoid placing the computer/laptop facing the window because the light will hit the screen directly and greatly reduce visibility. Also choose an artificial light source, an ambient one – a table lamp/lamp placed on the desk will not only enhance the desk, but the student will also have light for the evenings when he has more homework.

Even though school will take up most of your child’s time, we must not forget that their bedroom should be a cheerful, colorful space, a room that inspires joy. The colors you should choose for a schoolboy’s room are light yellow, blue, light green, or a light shade of purple.

A schoolchild’s room will change over the years. Be as flexible as possible, use your creativity and take into account a schoolchild’s real needs. Thus, their bedroom can become the perfect place to carry out their schoolwork.
