How to Choose the Perfect Sofa for Your Living Room

The sofa is the main piece of furniture in your living room, the place where you can relax on a Sunday afternoon, where guests will stay or the place where you will watch your favorite series with the whole family. The sofa is the focal point of the room, the key to the entire room’s design, the element that will set the tone for the style of your living room. That is why it is very important to see the purchase of a sofa as a long-term investment and to consider a few landmarks when deciding to complement your living room with such a piece of furniture. There are a multitude of styles and models of sofas – the design, color, size, material are just a few details that make the difference. Below, we offer you some tips & tricks in choosing the perfect sofa for your living room.

Choose the place where the sofa will be placed

The most important thing when you want to purchase a sofa (and any piece of furniture in general) is to take into account the space that the room offers you. So, the first step would be to measure the size of the space where you want to place the sofa and then choose your favorite model.

A trick for placing the sofa is to position it in a place where the sun does not fall directly, so the lifespan of the product will be longer. If we are talking about an open space living room or a studio apartment, you can place the sofa as a delimiting area between the dining area and the relaxation area.

The right sofa for your needs

There are several types of sofas, and depending on how you want to use it, you can choose a simple sofa, which does not unfold, or an extendable one that turns into a bed. If you know that you will someday need an extra bed, choose an extendable sofa. However, if you think that you will not use the sofa as a bed, then a simple sofa would be the ideal choice, especially since there are several options here.

The right size

The sofa’s size will always be influenced by the room’s dimensions. So, if you have a spacious living room, you can invest in a 4-5 seater corner sofa or a 3-4 seater modular sofa. For a studio apartment, you can opt for a 2-seater sofa bed that you can easily convert into a bed.

If you want your living room to give the impression of a large space, choose a compact sofa, comfortable enough, with thin wooden legs that will leave space between the seat and the floor, offering the impression of more generous space. However, be careful about the size of the sofa’s arms – if they are bulky, they will take up more space and will not bring you any extra comfort.

Sofa material

The perfect sofa must ideally combine comfort and appearance because this piece of furniture will completely influence the design of the room. Therefore, pay special attention to the material used for the sofa in order to be sure that you choose a model that will stand the test of time.

Ensure that the material of the sofa frame is sturdy and high-quality, providing long-lasting durability. The ideal choice would be the frame made of wood (preferably hardwood, such as walnut or beech) or metal (for a minimalist living room).

For sofa upholstery, there are several options depending on aesthetic considerations – leather, fabric, cotton, velvet. Fabric upholstery is the most accessible option for people who want simplicity and comfort. it is also the cheapest choice, but also relatively easy to maintain. In addition, there is a variety of colors and models available to choose from. For an elegant and masculine accent in your living room design, you can choose leather upholstery. It is very easy to maintain it with a damp cloth, which is all the care it needs.

The right color

In addition to the model, material and size, color is an essential feature in choosing the perfect sofa. There are a multitude of colors, prints and patterns. When choosing to buy a sofa you have to decide whether you want a simple model, a neutral color or, on the contrary, a strong print.

A neutral color, such as tones of beige, gray or white or black, will give the room an airy, clean and tidy look, allowing you to easily redecorate the future using decorative pillows or other ornaments. Neutral colors are especially suitable for rooms with a classic, minimalist design.

If a neutral color is not to your liking, you can choose a pastel color instead. They integrate perfectly into a decor with accessories in similar shades, giving a bright look to the space. Also, pastel-colored sofas perfectly complement bright shades if you choose such furniture.

In conclusion, when you decide to buy a sofa for your living room, you need to consider two important aspects: comfort and size. Decide on the space where you want to place the sofa, visualize the decor, note down all the details and go shopping!

Our Work – Designing a 250 sqm Home in Dubai

When you have a family, your focus naturally shifts to them, and you want to provide the very best in comfort and beauty. A large and welcoming house is definitely at the top of the list. Today, we would like to showcase the house of a couple, young parents with 2 children and a puppy. They wanted the 250sqm home, arranged on 2 levels and a basement, to be modern and up-to-date, with elegant accents. They wanted a balanced and unified space, with lots of light. Let’s see what came out!

The 250sqm house is organized on 2 levels and a basement. On the ground floor there is the living room and dining area, the kitchen, the guest room and a bathroom. Upstairs, there are 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, while the basement is used as a technical space and hobby room. No changes were made in terms of compartmentalization, but in terms of functionality. Thus, depending on the room and its destination, we focused on increasing the degree of comfort both by using quality finishes and by making the spaces more efficient.

The owners wanted a modern design with elegant accents, with a neutral color scheme; for the children (the 2 girls) they wanted their bedrooms to reflect their ages and personalities.

Living room

The living room is one of the brightest spaces in the house, so we paid attention especially to it. The space opens to the terrace, courtyard and kitchen through double glass doors. To make the most of the living room’s natural brightness and its garden-facing orientation, we chose white sheer curtains without drapes.

We arranged the living room around two elements that the owners wanted integrated in the design: the wood-burning fireplace and the piano. We highlighted these special pieces through the chosen colors, but also through the elegant and classic notes given by the finishes. Beige and gray tones but also white are the shades chosen for the arrangement of this space. The elegance of the living room is mainly given by the gray velvet sofa and the two spacious armchairs placed in the brightest area of the living room.

The living room flows into the dining area, where we selected a white wooden table paired with white chairs featuring beige upholstery.

Master Bedroom

The master bedroom has the same specific lighting as well. Therefore, for this room’s design we chose to use white and beige tones, with a lilac chromatic accent on one of the room’s walls. The furniture that we selected is simple, which does not clutter the space and which, moreover, is in line with the owners’ desires. The leather-upholstered bed and the lighting fixtures with golden accents, bring an extra touch of elegance to the bedroom.

Children’s bedrooms (girls)

The owners’ most important wish reflects the arrangement of the bedrooms of their two daughters.

They wanted rooms that were in line with their personalities and that reflected their passions.

So, the eldest daughter is passionate about sports, so we created an area for placing a trellis right in the bedroom.

My little girl loves to draw, so we designed a wall with chalkboard paint for her to draw on. We even painted the door, turning the room into a huge chalkboard.

For both rooms we created book storage spaces, thus creating a library where they can store all their books. Both rooms were decorated in beige-white chromatics, with blue and teal accents, soothing colors suitable for bedrooms and recreation spaces.

The kitchen

The kitchen was decorated in harmony with the living room, starting from a clearly established element – the island. Thus, the central island is used both as a cooking or dining space, as well as a work area. For maximum elegance and modernity of the space, the chromatic range consists of black and white. We took into account the entire size of the kitchen to create a functional and modern space.

Hallway and Staircase

In the hallway, we created storage spaces, a coat rack, and a bench adjacent to the existing dressing room on the ground floor. For the staircase area, we opted for a neutral color scheme, copper and white tones, in order to maintain the same style in which we decorated the entire house.

The bathrooms

The bathrooms are modernly designed, with elegant accents, creating a relaxation and spa area. The size of the spaces allowed us to add a bathtub, 2 sinks and storage spaces. We chose the color scheme of beige, white and brown, with blue accents for one of the bathrooms and gray accents for the other.

How to Decorate a Studio Apartment

The biggest challenge that appears when you want to furnish a studio apartment is to capitalize on the limited space and use it as best as possible, not cluttering it unnecessarily and ineffectively. Below are some tips and tricks for designing a studio apartment in the most functional way possible.

Colors

When choosing the color for a studio apartment, you should know that any light color will visually enlarge the space and give the impression of a bright and airy decor. So, choose light shades for both the floor and the furniture, walls or decorative objects.

You can’t go wrong with white, as it is a color suitable for any style of decoration. However, you can also opt for shades of beige, pale pink, yellow or gray for a more special setting. For long and narrow rooms, a trick you can use is to paint the farthest wall in a dark color to create a depth effect. You must be careful when it comes to selecting a consistent color scheme for your furniture and decorations.

As with your walls, choose light shades of brown, gray, or beige for your flooring to create a bright, relaxing space. If you choose a rug, opt for a plain one, without small details or patterns.

Furniture

When it comes to furniture, it’s best to choose practical, lightweight furniture that can be moved effortlessly from one side of the room to another. Choose furniture that is truly useful and opt for simple designs and straight lines that don’t clutter the space. This way, you’ll be able to furnish your studio apartment in an attractive, functional, and useful way.

Practical solutions

Considering that a studio apartment involves a combination of living room and bedroom, with the kitchen separate from the bathroom, the furniture is always made taking into account the size of the space, but also the partitioning. So, replace the bed with an extendable sofa, the coffee table with an extendable high table and choose folding chairs. For the dressing room, choose a wardrobe that extends over an entire wall, with a maximum depth of 20 cm, and sliding doors with mirrors. This way, you have enough storage space, and the mirrors will help you give depth to the space. If there is still space left, you can arrange a relaxation corner with a rocking chair, a comfortable armchair or a small desk as a workspace.

For kitchen furniture, the main advantage should be functionality. So, you know that you need enough space to store all your utensils, plates and pans. To save space, incorporate household appliances into the furniture. In the kitchen, choose furniture units with simple, smooth doors and without oversized handles, which open easily with a simple push.

Decorating a studio apartment is usually based on classic interior design rules. You also need a little creativity to personalize the decor. But as long as you take into account the size of the space and your needs, the tricks above will help you arrange your studio apartment in a way that creates a welcoming and functional space.

Styles and Colors – Color Combinations in Home Design

Colors are the most important factors when deciding to decorate a home. The right combination and use of colors are key to creating a harmonious space, as colors serve as the perfect tool to reflect the homeowner’s personality.

Without colors, the interior of the house would certainly lack warmth and uniqueness. Colors can be used to highlight certain areas of the home, making them stand out, or to subtly tone them down and keep them in the background. Some colors can become tiring to the eye if used in excessively, which is why the correct combination of colors and shades is very important.

Depending on the room and its features, you can create a decor that inspires a specific mood with the help of colors. There are a multitude of color combinations, from simple options to combinations that go beyond the sphere of classics. Each time the result is a different decor. In order to avoid mistakes, we have prepared a guide to choosing colors and shade combinations in home decoration.

Monochrome – decorating your home in one color

The simplest and most accessible option when it comes to decorating your home is to choose a monochromatic color scheme, which will then be combined with tones of the main color or with non-colors (white, black) to create the desired atmosphere. For example, for the bedroom you can choose a light green or blue for a warm and soothing atmosphere, while for the living room you can choose tones of yellow or brown for a more elegant touch. The kitchen can be decorated in neutral colors, such as gray, and the bathroom can be designed with a straw yellow or beige tones.

Two complementary colors

If you choose to decorate your home with more than one color, you should know that you will not go wrong if you choose to combine two complementary colors. Therefore, complementary colors are shades that are opposite on the color wheel – you can combine blue with orange, green with red or yellow with purple. In the orange-blue combination, choose orange for large surfaces and blue as an accent color; in the green-red combination, choose saturated tones of red and shades of light green; in the case of the combination of yellow and purple, choose yellow as a main shade and accents of purple. What you need to know is that all colors have different degrees of saturation, all that remains is to choose the shade that best suits your space. Decorating your home in complementary colors involves creating an aesthetically balanced space, with the two colors complementing each other and creating a harmonious contrast.

Three-color design

For a more interesting decor, the next step is to know the right combination of three colors to create a space with strong and harmonious contrasts. Tones that match each other in the same color scheme are at equal distances from each other on the color wheel. However, we recommend that the most intense color be the least present, and that the other two be used as shades.

So, whether you want a monochrome space, or in two or more colors, bringing life into your home through the use of colors is not difficult, you just have to pay close attention to the shade combinations and styles so that they still match the interior of your home.

Our Work – Designing a 3-Bedroom Apartment for a Couple

We continue the series of “our work” articles. This time, we are going to talk about with the furnishing of a 3-bedroom apartment for a couple, the concept of the furnishing revolving around the cheerfulness and joy that the owners instilled in us.

Although the deadline seemed impossible (2 months for the complete renovation, including changing the installations, finishing and ordering the furniture) we gathered all our inspiration and desire to make 2 more owners happy. The owners wanted a welcoming, warm and cheerful apartment, but at the same time an optimized space.

Living room
For the living room we chose a dressing room with a mirror that is spread across the entire width of the room, a TV chest of drawers with enough space for storage, and a sofa made of a special material. Chromatically, we relied on gray, blue and white, and as for the wall behind the TV we opted for a white brick texture.

Master Bedroom
For the master bedroom, we opted for a large bed with a padded headboard and storage space underneath. The wall behind the bed is clad in white brick, and the color scheme chosen for this room is a combination of white and gray, with accents of yellow and turquoise. The TV stand, with many drawers for storage, is also chosen precisely to optimize the space.

Second Bedroom
The secondary bedroom was designed as a space for relaxation and socializing. We opted for the same gray, white, and yellow color scheme, with a few turquoise accents. The wall units have hidden storage space, so you don’t even realize that those units are cabinets. Here too, we chose white brick texture for one of the walls, and for an industrial look we selected yellow sheet metal wall lamps.

The Kitchen
Although at first glance it is a small, simple kitchen with no hanging units, it has met the storage requirements. For a minimalist design, we have incorporated the dishwasher, refrigerator and oven into the furniture. The wall behind the furniture is a white brick-like tile, and the wall opposite the furniture (the one behind the table) is painted with black chalkboard paint so that the owners can write down their favorite recipes or daily schedule. Here too, we opted for the color combination used throughout the apartment – white, gray and yellow, with black accents this time.

The Bathroom
The bathroom was designed as a minimalist and simple space, an oasis of relaxation after a long day at work. We chose neutral colors (white and gray) with natural wood accents. All the attention goes to the oriental patterned tiles that create that spa-like atmosphere at home.

The second bathroom is the one that serves the master bedroom. We chose an elegant design and used cement gray and blue ceramic tiles in the arrangement. The white and gray chromatics enhance the modern design of the room. This time the emphasis was placed on the shower area – the area highlighted by the ceramic cladding.

The Shabby Chic Style in Interior Design

The Shabby Chic style originated in the UK and gained popularity for its affordability, requiring creativity rather than a large budget. The main characteristics of the shabby chic style are refurbished old furniture, pastel colors (pink, green, blue), floral motifs, wood textures and eclectic and vintage-style decorations.

Choose pastel colors

In the shabby chic style, the interior is bright, with the walls painted in a neutral shade, such as white or gray, but for a warm and welcoming environment, adding wallpapers in simple colors is a common thing. Pastel colors are frequently used. Pink, lilac, green, blue, turquoise are only a few of those shades that bring a rustic touch to the decor. Blue and turquoise are suitable for the kitchen, pink for the bathroom, while green is often chosen for bedrooms. All these tones can be easily matched with curtains and upholstery with floral motifs.

Furniture and Textures

Shabby chic is a style that requires for a lot of experimentation, so you don’t need new furniture to create the desired atmosphere, just a lot of creativity. Old pieces of furniture that you already have in your home can be painted and decorated to give them the desired look.

The furniture is often reconditioned and painted in white or beige, with peeling paint in certain places to give it an old and vintage look. Carved pieces of furniture are also present in this style (wrought iron chandeliers, display cases with legs or mirrors with imposing frames).

Wood is the key element in the shabby chic style (furniture, wall clocks), followed by natural materials such as cotton, linen or lace chosen for drapes, decorative pillows, bed linens, tablecloths, curtains. Natural materials are beautifully complemented by floral motifs (such as roses, garden flowers), which provides a botanical touch. You can choose decorative elements in a bright color to create contrasts with the neutral tones in the room.

Accessories and Ornaments

In addition to colors, textures, and furniture, you need a set of accessories to complement your chosen decor: handcrafted objects, crystal chandeliers, old paintings and vases, baskets, photo frames, carved-framed mirrors, decorative pillows, or lampshades. For an elegant and contemporary air to your space, you can combine vintage and new elements.

Design suggestions

Bedroom

  • Wrought iron bed painted in a pastel color, complemented by blue linen
  • An armchair by the window arranged with some decorative pillows with floral motifs
  • Refurbished bedside tables with paint chipped in places to highlight the vintage look

Living room

  • Sofa with floral print
  • Coffee table on which to place a vase of flowers and a tray of coffee cups
  • TV chest in a pastel or white shade, with paint peeling in some places

Kitchen

  • The massive chandelier would be the ideal choice to give the room a vintage air
  • The embroidered tablecloth would highlight the dining area
  • Scandinavian cotton covers with botanical motifs or decorative pillows to give a chic air to the kitchen

Bathroom

  • Fluffy rugs are essential in a shabby chic bathroom, both for comfort and for the cheerful atmosphere
  • Choose a mirror with a massive frame, wicker baskets to put accessories, makeup and skincare products in, vintage-looking hangers

A shabby chic style is very easy to customize and is not restrictive at all. All you have to do is give free rein to your inspiration and trust your tastes. With a little creativity and spare time, you can decorate your home without spending a lot of money.

Hygge and Nordic Style in Your Home

We’ve heard a lot about Nordic style in interior design and we know that it’s currently a trend. But what you need to know first and foremost is that Scandinavian style isn’t just about white walls and lots of wood. It’s about functionality, plenty of light, comfort, warmth and intimacy. In the following lines, we’ll give you some tips & tricks for decorating your home in Nordic, Scandinavian style or as most designers now call it, Hyggie.

Colors

The characteristic color palette of the Nordic style consists of white, which is omnipresent, complemented by light shades (tones of beige, straw yellow, light gray), pastels (green, turquoise or cherry red) and accents of black.

The most common color approach in this design style is based on white, complemented by chromatic accents of blue or red in various forms – accessories, a piece of furniture or decorative wallpaper applied to a wall. But you have to remember that an accent color should not be overused in order to keep the normal Nordic style. So, you can choose a turquoise sofa, but keep the rest of the room in neutral shades.

Textures and Materials

Natural materials such as wood, wrought iron or decorative stone are key elements in the design of a Scandinavian-style space. Choose an unfinished wood, which will give the room an industrial look and add natural textiles such as cotton, wool, fur or linen for a touch of eclecticism (blankets, pillowcases, rugs, curtains and drapes). Of course, refined materials such as leather, porcelain or velvet should be used as well.

Another extremely important element that prevails in Nordic-inspired homes are houseplants, which are usually placed everywhere in the house – on the dresser, floor or table.

Light

In Scandinavian-inspired homes, natural light is considered to be an element of intimacy, so it should flood the room. Windows are large and decorated with simple, diaphanous curtains made of natural materials. Chandeliers are not so important, but the emphasis is on the lamps, which can be noticed in different corners of the room. To create that hygge atmosphere, place candles in different corners of the room or on the windowsill to improve the atmosphere in the evening.

Flooring

Carpets are not popular at all in Scandinavian-inspired homes. The interior has natural, light-colored wood flooring, with the exception of the bathrooms. However, if you want to use rugs, choose a small one and place it in the center of the room.

Accessories and furniture

“Less is more” – this is the philosophy of the Scandinavian style. Both accessories and furniture are reduced so as not to clutter the space. Popular furniture elements of this style are high chairs, round tables and 60s sofas. You can emphasize the key points in the room with framed illustrations and messages, decorative pillows or a colorful sofa.

A Nordic-style room or home can be effortlessly decorated by following a few key principles – color, furniture placement, and accessories. The airy space and natural textures will bring a hygge touch to your home.

Our Work – Designing a Three-Bedroom Apartment

“A house is made of walls and beams. A home is built with love and dreams” – a quote as true as can be. In the following lines we will present to you the story of the arrangement of an 85sqm apartment in a minimalist, but at the same time modern, with glam accents style.

Each arrangement of an apartment is a challenge for us, because every apartment has its own story and its own purpose. This time we arranged an apartment with 3 rooms and an open space kitchen. The project lasted two and a half months. When we took over the project, the apartment was already built, but we still had our own touch to add. – prints, decorative paint and chromatic accents. In arranging the apartment, we focused especially on the vibe that the view inspired and the special brightness that the apartment benefits from, trying to improve every corner of the house. The clients wanted an apartment with a timeless, minimalist but at the same time modern design, which would reflect their personality and energy.

The apartment was already built, so we integrated our concept into the already existing finishes. We focused on a minimalist and modern design, with glamorous elements found within the lighting fixtures and bed upholstery.

The biggest challenge appeared when we started decorating the living room – a very welcoming space with glam accents, where we had to integrate a large sofa bed, a bar and a dining area for eight people. Since the space was quite small, we opted for an extendable coffee table (a table that converts into a dining table). The royal blue of the sofa is the color accent which can be easily noticed in the living room. It is a shade that we also chose for the master bedroom.

For the master bedroom, we applied industrial design principles. The bed with royal blue upholstery that we chose brings a touch of elegance to the room. We used a concrete-effect paint to match the ceiling. To maintain the spaciousness and brightness, we opted for compact furniture, an innovative solution, without unnecessarily burdening the space.

The second bedroom is a hybrid room: a dressing space for the owners and a cozy and welcoming bedroom for guests.

For the finishes, we opted for decorative paint to create the striped wall behind the sofa, but we selected similar chromatics – gray and white. To visually enlarge the space, we chose to tile the wardrobe doors with mirrors.

The owners wanted the kitchen to be a unique, atypical and attractive one, but at the same time minimalist.

We chose a black-and-white combination (used for the furniture and floor pattern) with yellow accents.

For the hallway, we chose a suspended storage unit so as not to clutter the space. Furthermore, we turned the balcony into a cozy and welcoming relaxation space, reflecting the vibe that the entire apartment offers.

Your Dream Kitchen – How to Organize and Design a Small Kitchen

Kitchen design can be a real challenge for most of us especially when we are dealing with a small kitchen. However, a small space doesn’t have to be a burden – there are many ways to make it meet your needs.

Keep in mind that when the space is properly organized, it will be much easier to find everything you need.

Organization Tips

Efficient space organization can be achieved by anyone. When you have a small kitchen, it’s essential to opt for wall and hanging storage solutions. Choose tall cabinets, reaching to the ceiling, and store what you use less often on the upper shelves. Use hooks on the cabinet doors as supports for accessories or small, lightweight objects. The vertical space between cabinets and walls can also be used for bottles or other containers. Categorize the utensils you choose to store in cabinets and keep them in a easily reachable place so you can quickly find them.

You can save space in your drawers or cabinets by organizing your utensils – put spices in small jars and hang them under the cabinets above the counter, and you can arrange larger jars of coffee, flour and other ingredients on shelves or in cabinets. Don’t cram your mugs and kitchen accessories into drawers or shelves, but opt for wall-mounted holders, so you’ll have them at hand whenever you need them and thus you can save space. Extendable tables and chairs could also be another option – you only use them when you need them, which is a very simple way to save space.

Wall-mounted shelves where you can store plates, bowls or glasses, chopping boards, cookbooks or a flower pot are a new trend in interior design. These extra shelves will offer your kitchen an authentic look, freeing up valuable space.

Materials and colors suitable for a small kitchen

In small spaces, light is very important. Walls and furniture in light shades will give the impression of extra brightness and naturalness. Opt for a kitchen with white furniture even if it is more difficult to maintain, and for the walls choose the texture of wood or brick. For lighting, choose recessed fixtures. They will take up little space and will give a special air to your kitchen.

The kitchen can impress you and become your favorite place in the house if you decorate it with skill and attention. Put the options above into practice, choose light shades and natural surfaces, give up unnecessary objects and you will be able to transform your small kitchen into a functional space where you will enjoy spending your time.

Small but very chic

We believe that to truly transform any space, you must first believe in its potential, believe that you can make it a place you fall in love with. Even when you only benefit from 25 square meters. Yes, that’s exactly what we said. Only 25 meters? So, we got to work, added a touch of pink, and voilà…the magic happened!

Since the challenge was to think of a nice, useful and livable place in the 25 square meters of this studio, we decided that it had to inspire a joyful atmosphere as soon as you stepped in. That’s how we chose the accent area with the wall painted in pink and white to which we added the two black sconces that seem to be smiling at us. The same pink paint was used in the kitchen as well. Here, we combined the metro style tiles with the white furniture with wooden details. The secret of such a small kitchen is a simple and discreet decoration, with an emphasis on the small details that give life to this type of space.

In contrast to the pastel shade, we painted another wall in an indigo blue. This shade complements the chromatic line in the bathroom. The bathroom follows the same design idea as the kitchen: “less is more”. The space reminded us of the sea, evoking a sense of tranquility. Therefore, we decided to use white furniture and ceramics. Moreover, we decided that the walk-in shower would be blue and cheerful.

And even though we have such a small place in front of us, it has enough storage space. Exactly what a tourist needs. The walls are covered with small furniture pieces that can store enough items and we even managed to find some space for a small dressing room.

Even if you’re just visiting this studio, you might even like the comfort here.
